This pendant reproduces the imagery of a silver coin issued by Metapontion in southern Italy during the fourth century BC.
The obverse portrays the laureate head of Zeus facing right. The reverse bears an ear of barley, the distinctive emblem that appeared on the city’s coinage for centuries and reflected the agricultural prosperity of its territory.
